5 of the Most Costly and Damaging Hurricanes In U.S. History

impact resistant hurricane windows and doors

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 until November 30 each year, featuring everything from minor storms to major, catastrophic hurricanes. These storms can upend trees, completely destroy buildings, and level entire communities.

It’s important to note that damage can at least be minimized with the installation of impact resistant hurricane windows and doors.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s January 2018 report, “Costliest U.S. Tropical Cyclones,” the government took a look at 36 hurricanes that have struck the U.S. between 1900 and 2017, all of which have caused at least $1 billion in damage, and listed them in the report.

Of all climate catastrophes, hurricanes have caused the most amount of damage — by far. Between 1980 and 2018 alone, damage from hurricanes hitting the U.S. totaled $862 billion. The cost of an average hurricane is an astounding $21.6 billion.

Here are some of the most notable destructive and costly hurricanes of all time:

  1. Hurricane Katrina — Katrina is by far the costliest and most devastating storm in the history of the United States. Resulting in 1,833 deaths and an unprecedented $160 billion in damage.
  2. Hurricane Harvey, 2017 — The second costliest hurricane in U.S. history is Hurricane Harvey, which caused $125 billion after hitting Texas and Louisiana.
  3. Hurricane Sandy, 2012 — Though Hurricane Sandy’s windspeeds barely topped triple digits, the flooding along the Mid-Atlantic resulted in $70.2 billion in damage.
  4. Hurricane Irma, 2017 — Hurricane Irma damaged 90% of the buildings on Barbuda, leaving 60% of the population homeless. Additionally, in the U.S., it devastated parts of Florida and caused $50 billion in damage.
  5. Hurricane Andrew, 1992 — This storm ravaged parts of Florida and Louisiana in the early 1990s, causing approximately $47.8 billion in damage.

Though hurricanes can clearly come with such powerful windspeeds and there is no way to 100% protect a residential or commercial structure from damage, you can still at least minimize damage with impact resistant hurricane windows and doors. Flying debris and strong winds can do a lot of damage, and hurricane proof windows and doors can at least preserve your home or business during major storms.
