Floridians Beware: Preparing For Hurricane Dorian’s Powerful Winds

Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Irma was the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history. This Category 5 storm brought 185-mile-per-hour winds for 37 consecutive hours, ravaging virtually everything in its path. According to WCVB, Hurricane Dorian, currently headed towards Florida, is the strongest storm on the planet this year.

Hurricane Dorian: What We Know

Dorian was a Cat 5 storm when it made landfall on the eastern end of the Bahamas over the weekend.

“We are in the midst of a historic tragedy,” said Prime Minister Hubert Minnis of the Bahamas. “Our focus is search, rescue and recovery. I ask for your prayers for those in affected areas and for our first responders.”

Social media sites and weather channels have been showcasing videos detailing the powerful winds and the devastation the storm is causing across all kinds of structures.

“Many homes, businesses, and other buildings have been completely or partially destroyed,” added Mr. Minnis.

As the Bahamas continue to deal with the wreckage, forecasters are warning Floridians that conditions could worsen in the coming days. A hurricane warning was extended to about 240 miles of the Florida coast on Monday — from just north of West Palm Beach to Jacksonville.

“It cannot be stressed enough that only a small deviation to the left of the N.H.C. forecast could bring the core of the extremely dangerous hurricane onshore of the Florida east coast within the hurricane warning area,” wrote a National Hurricane Center forecaster.

So what can be done to protect both people and properties across Florida?

Importance of Hurricane Proof Doors and Windows

Though rescue teams and brave volunteers are doing all they can to help people in the Bahamas deal with the wreckage, efforts need to continue across the Sunshine State, as well. For businesses, real estate developers, and commercial and residential contractors looking to secure their structures; installing hurricane proof doors and windows is an essential step.

Thankfully, these high-impact glass doors and windows are resistant to even Category 5 hurricanes, the biggest and most destructive type of storm imaginable. Don’t wait for a disaster to strike before you act. Make the call right away if your structure’s windows and doors are not built to withstand powerful winds and flying debris.

Though Hurricane Dorian has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, it’s important to note that is still a very dangerous storm. The National Hurricane Center believes, despite its decreased wind speed, Hurricane Dorian’s combined wind, surge, and flood hazards still need to be monitored by Floridians — especially contractors, developers, and condo associations.

Whether it’s right in the middle of Hurricane Season or months away, if you’re in charge of keeping a commercial or residential structure safe and secure during major storms, you need to ensure that these buildings are equipped with top-of-the-line hurricane proof doors and windows.
